Gowri and Puneeth from Namma Basava
  Going, going & still going!

Festivals are over but the festivity continues at Kannada film industry. With several biggies hitting the marquee with substantial stickiness, the uphill phase continues at the box-office. Except some of the low-grade movies, most of the films released in the past two months have crossed 50 days and some are nearing this mark. Is it because of an improved quality or unique presentation? There is a mixed opinion about it among the pundits however!

Puneeth in AkashPuneeth Rajkumar seems to be luckier so far. His home production Akash has touched 28 week's mark. This is an exemplary movie that is running without any hype but purely based on its virtues. It's also been screened in Australia recently which shows the demand for good movies abroad. Puneeth's latest film 'Namma Basava' too had a promising start though was released in a hurry and not publicized properly. Namma Basava has completed 6 weeks and still going on.

Contender for Namma Basava was Auto Shankar of Upendra that completes six weeks and moving towards 100 days! His earlier film Gowramma ran for 100 days but the next movie News bombed miserably.

Then comes Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar's directorial production Amrutha Dhare that too has completed 50 days. Apparently, Ramya and Dyan in Amruta Dharethis movie was well received in the US (distributed by Chirag Entertainers) and is being screened even in Australia. However, the craze for this film is Bangalore centric and collection is dipping in other centers according to the distributor.

Actor Darshan's Swamy is nearing 50 days. Interestingly, it's being screened at Majestic Theater that normally screens non-Kannada films!

Other films completed 50 days are Deadly Soma, Mental Manja. The most hyped movie of the year Jogi is unassailably moving toward 100 days and a grand 100-day function is being organized at Bangalore Palace Ground on November 27.

So, is it a boom time? Yes to certain extent say industry experts! As per the current schedule, there's going to be no respite at least till end of January 2006. To be on the winning streak, our producers need to intelligently schedule their releases and avoid clashing with multiple films in a week. It's time we learn from our past mistakes and work towards a win-win situation!
