Rowdy Aliya facing theater problem
It was during 70s and 80s when Kannada film industry was in
peak. But in today's scenario, out of 90 to 100 films releasing
every year hardly 5 to 10 films are turning out to be successful.
Filmmakers say, is because of lack of viewers while the filmgoers
claim, there are no good films! Success of a film is not based
just on the story and the crew but the way it is presented
too. That's where the theaters and exhibitors come into the
scene.
For Kannada movies, theaters in Gandhinagar area play a major
role in box office collection. But the development off late
there is trying to keep Kannada films away from their theaters.
During last October, film Chigurida Kanasu of Shivarajkumar
faced the theater scarcity problem for its release and now
one more of his Rowdy Aliya directed by Sai Prakash and produced
by Mohan of Anand Audio is facing similar trouble. Mohan who
wanted to release this film on January 30th had sent a letter
to Sagar theater owner Rajesh Patel during December first
week itself followed by a letter from Karnataka Film Chamber
of Commerce. Despite of this, Hindi film Khaki (starring Amitab
Bachan) was released in this theater on Jan 23rd. On top of
this, the theater owner issued a legal notice against Mohan
for mentioning Sagar theater's name in his advertisement blowing
the agreement in air. Bhasha,
the distributor of Khaki is ready to take his film back from
Sagar
theater but the owner is not ready
to leave the theater for Rowdy Aliya. Mohan now releasing
the film in Abhinaya theater on B.V.K. Iyangar Road on Feb
6th. Though
his supporters are ready to protest against this theater owner,
he is not interested in taking the route of roudism. Such
breached commitments and disrespecting the agreement by exhibitors
is making the producers think twice before making new Kannada
films. Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce is there for namesake,
which could not do anything to handle the situation.
The service tax issue in Karnataka has spoiled the relationship
between the producers and exhibitors very badly. Some exhibitors
here are trying to avoid screening Kannada films. Base for
all these crises is the service tax issue initiated by producers
is an important point to be noted here! But such move of exhibitors
who break the agreement is highly condemnable.
