P. Lankesh, is an unforgettable multifaceted personality in the field of literature, theater, filmmaking, direction and most importantly as a sharp writer for his own magazine 'Lankesh Patrike'. P. Lankesh passed away at the age of 65 in the year 2000. In his remembrance, his daughter Kavitha Lankesh, for the first time in Karnataka, has constituted a national film award for the best debut director in the name of her father P.Lankesh. Incidentally, Lankesh had won the national award for his very first film 'Pallavi'. Kavitha too had won the national award for her debut film 'Deveeri' based on Lankesh's novel. Kavitha Lankesh"That is why we think it is apt that we should confer this award on a debut director. We hope this award will not only encourage new talent but will also go a long way in improving the quality of Indian cinema," says Kavitha. "Surprisingly in the first year of constituting this award itself we received 12 films from across the country. A five-member jury unanimously selected Sancharram (Journey) - a Malayalam film directed by Mrs. Ligy J.Pullaappally, a Chicago-based director" she added.

About Sancharram:
Still from SancharramSancharram(The Journey) is a poignant and beautiful tale of two girls in love. Sancharram is technically almost perfect; J. Radhakrishna's cinematography of Kerala's nativity in a rural backdrop with its lush greenery and waterfalls is serene and beautiful. Isaac Thomas Kottukapally's music haunts you long after you leave the darkness of the theatre. The narration and the pace of the film are lyrical and poetic, and the main actors Shruthi Menon(Delilah), Suhasini V Nair (Kiran) have given a sensitive and touching performance.

Kavitha said "The award has been declared to Ligy because of her sensitive portrayal of a lesbian theme. Watching Sancharram, one never feels it is vulgar or deals with an uncommon subject, a closet story, but feels as if one is watching a beautiful love story, but between two women."

The members of the jury were:
1. Mr. Maralusidappa - an educationist and a theatre person.
2. Agrahara Krishnamurthy - a poet and a writer.
3. Laxmipathy Kolar - a poet and a social activist.
4. Kodihalli Shivaram - an award winning film director, producer
5. Kavitha Lankesh - an award winning film director
