'Malgudi Days' - a chapter reopened
 An
unforgettable serial Malgudi Days is coming soon once again
on small screen as well as on silver screen. The banner, which
made the highly applauded Malgudi Days in 1986 under the direction
of Late Shankar Nag, is back with other stories of R.K. Narayan.
After sudden demise of Shankar Nag, the works of Malgudi came
to a halt. But T.S. Narasimhan, the producer of those episodes
had the rights for `The Man Eater of Malgudi'. Anant Nag,
brother of Shankar Nag wrote the screenplay and got the approval
from R.K. Narayan on 3rd October 1993. Unfortunately the work
could not progress but subsequently the details for the television
programming were done.
In October 2003 Anant Nag suggested young and talented director
Kavitha Lankesh to direct and reproduce the Malgudi Days -
a visual media of R.K. Narayan's writings. Snake Song, An
astrologer's day, The doctor's world, Dodu, The gold belt,
The neighbor's help, The antidote, Minister without portfolio
and Korean grass, Lawley road, Salt and sawdust, Four rupees,
Annamalai and The man eater of Malgudi will be made into 26
 episodes
and as well as a feature film in 35 mm simultaneously. This
feature film is not only for commercial release worldwide
but also for National and International festivals. The idea
is to strike Oscar with this feature film. The main characters
in The Man Eater of Malgudi are Nataraj and Vasu. Anant Nag
and Prakash Rai are playing those roles respectively. Tara
plays the wife's role of Anant Nag and Nandita Das may act
in Rangi's role. Malgudi will be recreated in Agumbe and the
work will be started immediately intended to complete the
project by October 2004.
This was announced in a pres meet attended by T.S. Narasimhan,
Anant Nag, Prakash Rai, Kavitha Lankesh and Tara last week.
These days when 'Saas-Bhahu' serials are minting money, Narsimhan
is producing Malgudi Days for television. According to him
those serials are out of reality and his production will be
a good and quality entertainer.
